Performance Management

Performance management is essential to the success of employees, managers, supervisors and the University, and is a requirement for supervisors to complete an annual appraisal. Continuous performance feedback is important to a positive and effective rapport between supervisors and their employees. Annual performance appraisals should be a review of conversations that have already taken place during the appraisal period; there should be no surprises for you or the employee.

Performance Appraisals

  • All Staff Access the Staff Performance Appraisal (SPA) system here: SPA Online System
  • Career employees receive a written performance appraisal annually.  Academic employees, employees in a Short Term Exception (STE) or limited appointment, and recalled retirees do not participate in the annual SPA process.
  • Newly hired or rehired career employees receive a probationary performance appraisal within six months after their hire date. The written performance appraisal will be finalized at least 30 days before the six month probationary period ends.
  • Managers and Senior Professionals (MSP) and Senior Management Group (SMG) employees do not have a probationary period.

Self-paced training on using the appraisal system is available in UC Learning: SPA system includes the current standards and rating scale as set forth in the UCSD Performance Standards and Academic Affairs Performance Standards (PDF).
